Salar De Uyuni – Bolivia

We arrived into Uyuni from La Paz in the morning and as soon as we got off the bus, we were greeted by number of sales ladies trying to sell us packages. We were both still quite groggy from waking up at 5am and all we cared about was getting some breakfast. So it was just our luck that this one lady told us about a cafe called Noni’s where I ordered some muesli and cafe con leche.

We didn’t really fancy walking around with our bags so while I waited at the cafe, David kindly went around to agencies gathering information. You get the option of doing one, two or even three days tour but given our budget we opted for the one day tour with an agency called Betto tours which is right next to Noni’s cafe. If you are looking for the cheapest, then this will be your best bet at only 150 soles for the tour in Spanish.

The tour itself was decent, many agencies pretty much offer the same places to visit. I guess if you want to pay more, you could get a better tour guide, as looking around we saw some excellent guides whereas our guide wasn’t so enthusiastic and would just briefly tell us some basic information while he waited in the car. Anyway, that was ok for us.

We got to visit train cemetery, the market, made several stops in the salt flats (which is huuggeeee by the way), stopped for our lunch that was included at “bandera de los paises”, some more stops for fun photos, volcano Tunupa, isla Incahuasi (entrance not included but you have the option to enter or not – we didn’t as it was just an island with lots of tall cacti and you can easily take photos without entering) and finally another stop to watch the sunset before returning to the main town.

Overall, we had so much fun. It’s definitely a place you need to visit especially if you’re in Bolivia as its been pretty much our highlight since being here. After this, you can easily find a bus from the terminal that heads straight to the border of chile and even further for 130-180 bs. More information on that in my next post.
